President's Address

Igbo kwenu!  Igbo kwenu!  Igbo Kwezuonu!! It is with great honor that I and the members of the executives are here to serve the Igbo Community of Colorado, the proud people of African descent.  Igbos are men and women who are not concerned simply with getting by but in their own quiet way sustain the life of society they live in.  They generate solidarity by their actions such as during the Aba Women’s Riot of November and December 1929.  I would like to believe that I am here today and in this position because “you”, my people has spoken.  The book of James 3:1 says: Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  We are here today in this land to shape the fundamental values which will endure forever in the spirit of the American people.  A tribe with this spirit can live through many crises, tensions and conflicts, while always finding the resources to move forward, and to do so with dignity. Through our hard-work which we are known for, you find the Igbos in every economic levels in the United States of America.   Our ancestors offer us a way of seeing and interpreting reality.  Amerika bu mba ama onyeukwu.  In honoring their memory, we are inspired, even amid conflicts, and in the here and now of each day, to draw upon our deepest cultural reserves of story telling.  We are of a tribe that builds their life from scratch just like following the civil war.  We are from the tribe of hero’s and respected elders such as Nnamdi Azikiwe of Onitsha, Chinua Achebe of Ikenga, Ogidi, Jaja of Opobo (a native of Umuduruoha, Amaigbo), and Odumegwu Ojukwu of Nnewi, to name a few.

Join us in celebrating and promoting Igbo history and culture!

About Our Organization

Igbo Community of Colorado herein referred to as “ICC” is a non-profit cultural Association of Igbos founded by Igbos in Colorado to preserve and promote their cultural heritage and to:

  • Foster unity among Igbos in Colorado;

  • Encourage and participate in cultural activities beneficial to ICC and its membership;

  • Cooperate with other Associations with similar interests;

  • Conduct and participate in educational programs and activities that promote inter-cultural understanding.

This association was formed over twenty years ago and continues to grow to this day.  ICC is comprised of family and single memberships of both men and women.  Meetings are held every second Sunday of the month and the locations has changed over these years.  It is the intention of ICC to one day secure a place which they will call their own.    To make this happen among other purposes, the association continues to raise fund yearly.

ICC is a well-known association in the community and state that we live in, through our participation in various activities such as manning Broncos beverage stands, working with the American Cancer Society, and other community events, to name a few.  ICC holds educational sessions educating both children and adults in the culture and language of the Igbos.  As our constitution states, “We are who we are, IGBOS, people of destiny, undeterred by adversity, distance, or the passage of time.”
